Churches promoting waste reduction, re-use, recycling and composting
"The church is well-equipped spiritually, and well-placed geographically (having a 'branch' in every community), to promote the culture-change to waste reduction, re-use of waste, and waste recycling / composting.

This can be done by building on churches' existing strengths in doing recycling / composting and working with the community sector and local government, and in making available church land for the new waste facilities that we all need".

This is the outcome of Jon Hale's research during his ten week sabbatical from parish ministry in Autumn 2007.

Click on the links below to read Jon's research report and appendices to the report on various aspects of Opportunities for the church to promote sustainable waste management in England.

The publication of Jon's report is timely. On 5th November 2007 the Environment Agency published its list of fifty recommended actions - in order of priority - to 'save the planet'.

Number two in the list (the second-most important out of fifty) is:
'Religious leaders to make the planet their priority: it is time that they fulfilled their rightful collective role in reminding us that we have a duty to restore and maintain the ecological balance of the planet.' www.environment-agency.gov.uk
